SAGOY OUTDOOR CLUB at LANAYA PeaK

The town of Alegria, located south west of cebu of about 130kms, is where the famous Mt. Lanaya is located. Famous for it's breathing taking uphill climb. Locals also called it Kalo-Kalo peak. For me, getting on the peak can be categorized by two, the initial and the final assault.

The SOC attempted climbing Mt. Lanaya last 2010 with different routes. With our two guides who were not that faniliar or mabe they just don't  know the exact way getting there. We saw no trails on our way going up. It was a very challenging climb for the beginners like us and since we haven't settled at 6pm+, we end up camping on the other side just beside the globe tower where we saw the peak during day time.

at south bus terminal.. last buy

On the second attempt last March 30-31, 2013 SOC rendezvous was in Cebu south bus terminal and took some time to buy supplies for meals and some water to replenish during the climb. Exactly 9am, we departed to Alegria via CERES bus liner. Part of the trip was fun seeing seas beanath a cliff when reaching part of Barili. Past 12nn, we arrived in Alegria proper where two of the SOC's stepped off the bus to buy some foods for our lunch while the rest of us proceed to Brgy. Legazpi where we had out lunch and also where the trek to Mt. Lanaya starts. Locals informed us that there was a first group who already begun walking just ahead of us of about an hour. Anyway, Sagoys don't mind. Now, before starting to push ourselves to the heights, we did have our photo shoot while I was busy setting my phone enabling to record our track. The beach just in fron Brgy. Legazpi was also awesome. So clean that it has a shore compised of small bright stones. Temptation was there yet we were able to refuse the call of the sparkling beach. Next time maybe. The group is very excited to climb since this is our pre climb training to Mt. Kanlaon, Negros next month.

After setting up my GPS, the group now proceeds to the first part of the climb. It was a trek going up in a wide road that can accommodate 4 wheel vehicles. Along the way, we meet kids who were just locals who offered themselves as a guide. At a right price we agree in a price of 200 for both of them. As we continue, we then entered the trail. Part of the initial climb was the famous hills, known well for its similarity to the windows XP desktop. Thus this part was commonly known as the windows xp. You will never walk through it not noticing its beauty. It’s a good place also to set up a camp. But we agree to set camp only near the peak. The initial climb took us 2 hours that of course includes several stop over for a rest since it was a very hot summer.

We now arrived at the foot of the mountain where there is a house where we also bought some coconut. Since our water is low and so few remain that it was only enough for cooking dinner, we manage to use coconut as a substitute to our water to hydrate us going up.

After refilling, we now proceed to the second part which is the final assault. Here the breathe taking part enters. We encounter an uphill climb of about 30-80degrees inclination. Holding on to some twigs is useful but some part needs our rope to hold on to especially when the path becomes steep and slippery. Its the hardest and the most breathe catching part accompanied by the heat of summer. A piece of advice, it would be much better if each carry at least 3 liters of water.

As we continue climbing we begun to see the beauty of the plain below and after 2 hours, we reached the campsite number 2 since campsite no. 1 was occupied by the other mountaineers ahead of us. We now waive our goodbye to the two kids who guide us reaching the peak and hand them P300 instead of P200. If not to them,  we might as well land where we had our camp on our first attempt. Here, the campsite could not accommodate more than 5 tents, Luckily there was only 3 tents for us. It was now time to take some rest begore setting up a camp and to check my GPS tracking. It records our following data.

dinner time

pansit cantong nahubas

After setting up a camp, cooking proceeds but unfortunately there was only 1.5L of water left for us for cooking. Our Pansit canton was dehyrated hehehehe.... So if your planning to experience Mt Lanaya make sure you have plenty of water inside your bags since the foot of the mountain dont have a water source. After dinner, it's now time for the all time favorite. The session with Emperador. The story telling of the past TC experience and lovelife hihhihi.

SOC

The next day wake up call sounded by koko at 6am and proceeds to boil water for a zip of coffee just to heat up our stomach. By 7:00am we now climb to the peak of mt. Lanaya. It took us for about 15 minutes only to get there. Later on at the peak another group also wants to take a sneak at the peak. There we exchange introductions of knowing both groups. It was great knowing the COATONG a group composed of mostly from Innodata and neighbors. After minutes of introducing both sides, the two groups decuded to descend together and at 8am, the group started descending and again, GPS tracking was also started. The trail was wasy and only lasted for an hour. There we meet locals and we even ask for water and sili and took some puctures along the way. Hour after we reach the Barangay road and this is also where the GPS tracking stops. It still records our following date.

outside kugmo's house with COATONG!

We were then invited by the COATONG to have lunch with them. Thanks for their tinoland manok and the sitaw mixed with corned beef and a few gallons of coconut wine also known as tuba while chilling the crib. That was kind of a heavy lunch for me. At 2pm the group, still with COATONG, proceeds to Gitara sprin tog by multicab and the rest by motorcycle.Fare was about P35-P50. It was a mistake choosing a multicab, the cab cannot carry us along the sloppy road and some of us were able to push the cab just to surpass the steep road. It took us an hour to get to Gitara springs. Reaching the spring was worth the effort. A very cold and bluish green water in a form of a guitar. Such a very wonderful place. Swimming, jumping and laughing. At exactly 5pm, it's now time to sat goodbye to Gitara spring and head down to the Hi-way. Transportation was still motorcycle and multicab of a fare of 50 pesos each. Good thing we were not able to step down the multicab along the way it's because we limit the load.

TUBA saves the day!

group pics at  gitara springs.. on our way to alegria proper

By the time we reach the Hiway, we were so unfortunate seeing all buses that passes were fully occupied.  We were not able to board on a bus and so we tried looking for pick ups or jeeps going to cebu and we will just pay but sad most of the trucks that we visit are not capable of bringing 19 persons at the same time. One of the local offered us but we cannot afford the price he offer 5k. So the group decided to set up a mat were we could rest and cooked for dinner while waiting for the very first trip in the morning. Again, fun starts after dinner till dawn. COARONG group was so active they had it all the night.

By the 2:00 am the first trip of the CERES bus arrives and sadly not all of us were accommodated. All of SOC has boarded the bus and few of COATONG's all standing position up to Cebu proper! We cant even sleep because the driver of the bus was in a hurry its like riding a rollercoaster. Just before 4:10am SOC have arrived Cebu City and departed in our own ways........

It was FUN !!!!

Special thanks:
